Helpful hints for getting the most out of NYSentencing…

Website Login
  • Go to NYSentencing.com website, click “Login”
  • Enter email address & password, click “Login”
  • Click “Launch” to open NYSentencing app in a new tab
App Navigation
  • Penal Law navigation – you can use the left app panel to access the Penal Law by Part, Article or through the article Index.
  • Hovering over an article number in the left app panel brings up a descriptive tool tip.
  • Use the left panel arrow buttons to move the right app panel forward or back.
  • Alternatively, you can click in the right app panel to drill down by Penal Law Part, Article, and Section.
App PL Offenses
  • All Penal Law offenses are annotated with hyperlinks.
  • Follow highlighted text links to review definitions of defined terms.
App Elements
  • On each Penal Law offense page, select an offense subdivision from the dropdown list
  • Click “Elements” to open a new window with a summary of offense elements for that subdivision.
App Subdivisions
  • On each Penal Law offense page, use the dropdown list to select a specific offense subdivision for further analysis.
App CJI2d
  • On each Penal Law offense page, click “CJI2d” to open a new tab pointing to the most relevant jury charge from CJI2d online.
App Bail
  • On each Penal Law offense page, click “Bail” to view a summary of rules governing Bail, Release and Remand for the selected offense.
App Bail
  • At the top of any Bail Report, click “Rules” to link to full text of bail statutes (CPL articles 500-540).
App Pleas
  • On each Penal Law offense page, click “Pleas” to view a summary of rules governing pleas and plea bargaining for the selected offense.
App LIO’s
  • On each Penal Law offense page, under “Lesser”, click “Summary” or “Argument” to open new window with a list of offenses that are calculated to be legal lesser included offenses of the selected offense.
  • “Summary” gives a simple list.
  • “Argument” in addition displays a chain of reasoning supporting each result.

  • On each Penal Law offense page, under “Greater”, click “Summary” or “Argument” to open new window with a list of offenses of which the selected offense is calculated to be a legal lesser included offense.
  • “Summary” gives a simple list.

  • In any LIO Report, clicking on a highlighted offense citation loads that offense into the main app window for further study.
App Sentences To view a Sentencing Report for any offense,
  • Navigate to the offense page
  • Select a specific offense subdivision
  • Specify either a “Completed” or “Attempted” offense
  • Select an offender status
  • Click “Sentences.”
App Sentences
  • Certain offenses are defined by the commission of a “specified offense” in combination with additional elements (e.g.,
    • PL 120.70 Luring a child,
    • PL 130.91 Sexually motivated felony,
    • PL 485.05 Hate crimes,
    • PL 490.25 Crime of terrorism,
    • PL 496.06 Public corruption).
  • To produce a Sentencing Report for such offenses:
    • Navigate to the offense page
    • Select and “Store” a Specified Offense (either “Completed”, “Attempted” or, in some cases, “Conspiracy”)
    • Select a defendant status
    • Click “Sentences”
App Coverage Subject matter covered includes:
  • Penal Law
  • Selected VTL offenses (DWI, AUO)
  • SORA offenses.
App Coverage Time coverage is as follows:
  • For judiciary, premium and special annual memberships, access to annual versions extends from the current year back to 2001.
  • “Basic” monthly memberships cover the current year only.
  • “Preferred” monthly memberships cover the past five years.
